Rabbi Ben Leinow joined Congregation B’nai Tikvah in January 2009. As both a Rabbi and Doctor of Psychology, he brings a wealth of experience to the congregation. After receiving a B.A. in Economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara and an M. A. in Economics at U.C.L.A, his involvement with the Hillel Foundation moved him in the direction of becoming a Rabbi. He began his rabbinic studies in Los Angeles and, in 1966, was ordained at Hebrew Union College/Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio. After graduation, Rabbi Leinow was chosen to be Regional Director of the Canadian Council of Reform Congregations.

Following his Canadian experience, Rabbi Leinow became Co-Rabbi at Temple Israel of Hollywood. †It was there that he became very interested in Pastoral Counseling and eventually earned a Ph.D. in

Rabbi Ben Leinow, Ph.D.
Counseling Psychology from Loyola University in West Los Angeles.† Soon after, he created and developed the popular Jewish Marriage Encounter program. Focusing on his Psychology training, Rabbi Leinow has spent the last seventeen years working with the poor, homeless and the mentally ill. He has served as both Clinical Director of Mental Health Services and Director of Program Development for Interfaith Community Services in Escondido, CA. From 1993 to 2004, Rabbi Leinow was an active member of the Palomar Hospital Investigative Review Committee Board.†

Rabbi Leinow envisions B’nai Tikvah as a community Synagogue - available to all people with spiritual needs.† It is his dream that “we become a group of friends, at ease, learning from each other, and all feeling welcome under the same roof.” He is one of the few Rabbis in Southern California who will conduct a wedding for interfaith and same gender couples as well as co-officiate with clergy of other faiths.† He remains active in the community, enjoys the outdoors and feels a spiritual connection to the ocean, desert and mountains.
